Middle East Minister Alistair Burt yesterday welcomed the progress made by the Kingdom in implementing recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI).

Mr Burt said: “I welcome the National Commission’s report on implementing BICI recommendations. I am pleased to see the progress the Bahraini government has made so far in responding to the report, in taking steps aimed at preventing future abuses of human rights. Introducing a police code of conduct, placing cameras in interrogation rooms and establishing a media oversight body are all important steps. It is also encouraging to see the establishment of a Special Investigations Unit with a mandate to bring to justice those who have perpetrated human rights abuses. We look forward to seeing the effect of these measures.”

“But this is a long-term process and there is more to do. It remains critical that the Bahraini government continues its work to implement the commission’s recommendations, in particular ensuring that recent agreements are honoured, addressing issues of accountability and changing behaviour and culture. This should go hand-in-hand with an inclusive, constructive and realistic political dialogue between the government and political societies. The UK, as a friend and ally, will continue to give its support to these processes.”

Mr Burt had even called Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa to inform him about UK’s statement. He also highlighted the strong brotherly relations that bonded the two Kingdoms.

Russia lauds Kingdom

Russia yesterday hailed the leadership’s strenuous efforts to boost security and stability in the Kingdom.

In a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry, Russia stressed its support. “Russia has always made a positive evaluation of the leadership's efforts to promote political stability in Bahrain,” the statement said pointing out the need for continuous dialogue.
