The National Commission in charge of implementing Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry recommendations yesterday proposed the amendment of certain provisions of the law on penal procedures.

The proposal stems from its keenness to draw up legal measures to protect plaintiffs, witnesses and experts in cases of torture and other forms of harsh and inhuman treatment.

The commission drafted a proposal to add three articles to the law before submitting them to the government. The proposed articles feature procedures which could be taken by the Public Prosecution to protect witnesses giving testimonials in a particular case against threats.

Cutting edge audio visual technologies would be used and residence and identity would be changed to ensure safety of witnesses.

The commission praised the Interior Ministry for issuing a police code of conduct to which security forces should commit while assuming their duties, a move which would promote confidence between police and society and ensure police operate as a professional and neutral party, thus enforcing the basic values underlying the rule of law.
