Government Response
Bahrain's government agreed to implement this recommendation through a training programme prepared by the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC) in the city of Syracuse, Italy. The Institute enjoys a special consultative position at the United Nations and the European Council, and has also signed a cooperation agreement, especially with the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV). This Institute is also one of the eighteen organisations that make up the network of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. This network will help the United Nations and interested member states in strengthening international cooperation to combat crime and criminal justice.
This non-profit institute provides a programme that was developed with Professor Bassiouni. It includes internationally prominent experts from the Arab world; and its materials, which are in Arabic, are related to human rights law and international criminal law. The curriculum also includes studies for real cases provided by the BICI.
The special characteristic of this programme is that it takes an integrated approach, where all concerned parties that participate in the investigation and the trial of the accused of torture and inhuman treatment, will participate with each other in a way that enhances cooperation among the parties. According to that, the training will comprise small groups that include members from the judiciary authority, the Public Prosecution and the police.
