A TOP official yesterday withdrew his resignation from a commission tasked with following up recommendations of a probe report into Bahrain's unrest. Shura Council chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh had announced his intention to quit his chairmanship of the National Commission on Saturday after complaining of "unjust" accusations targeting his honour, dignity and judgment.

However, he made a U-turn yesterday following intervention by His Majesty King Hamad. "I have decided on the request of His Majesty to continue with my duties in the commission," he said. "The trust I have been given to continue with my task in the commission is something I am proud of.

"The commission will continue performing its tasks in the utmost professional manner for the sake of the country's continuous development and reform that serve the nation and its people. "We want to restore unity in the country and regain the trust lost between all parties.

"Also to encourage democracy as a practice and foundation for our unity to return, which is something that we believe is Bahrain's greatest strength." Mr Saleh was appointed chairman of the commission by a royal decree to ensure the findings of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) report are implemented.

He claimed the allegations against him surfaced when he reinstated four council workers sacked for their involvement in the unrest for humanitarian reasons.

"I am doing my work to heal the rift and bridge gaps within the community, but there are voices that try to damage everything that my commission and I are working to achieve," he told the GDN yesterday. "We don't want to speak about them now as the focus is on implementing the BICI recommendations and we have taken huge steps in that regard.

"His Majesty believes in us and he knows that we are up to the task and hopefully we will complete our job as intended by the end of February." Mr Al Saleh said on Saturday that he had distanced his work as council chairman from his tasks in the commission.
